This presents the inventions developed by Göran Skoog under the framework Skoog Architecture l S.K.O.O.G Skoog Kinetic Orbital Oscillating Generator and its sub-initiative Skoog Open Marine Technology (SOMT).
Thirteen innovations span autonomous offshore freshwater production, emergency protein synthesis, wave-energy propulsion, turbine design, surface coating technology, Proactive Microplastics solutions (the first in the world) and navigation methodology.
All technologies are released as open source under CC BY 4.0.
1. INTRODUCTIONThe global shipping industry accounts for approximately 3% of CO2 emissions, while over 2 billion people lack access to safe drinking water and millions face acute protein deficiency. Göran Skoog’s framework addresses these challenges through a single design philosophy: harvesting the ocean’s orbital wave motion, thermal gradients, and solar heat to generate freshwater, food, and propulsion without fossil fuels, electricity, or toxic chemistry. The framework encompasses two primary branches: the Humanitarian Branch, embodied in the Skoog Buoy (SCSL) for water and the Skoog Tablets (SCLS) for emergency food, and the Propulsion Branch centered on the Skoog Harvester (AWEV).
2. SKOOG BUOY SCSL — CAPILLARY SWEATING LIANAThe Skoog Buoy SCSL is the world’s first zero-electricity industrial water-from-air generator ready for coastal deployment. It sweats freshwater from humid ambient air using three passive energy inputs: deep-sea cold (approximately 4°C), solar heat, and latent heat recovery. A 1,000-metre closed-loop HDPE pipe—the thermal liana—brings 4°C deep-sea water to the buoy via wave-driven circulation. Humid air rises through an 18-20 metre solar chimney and passes through a capillary condensation matrix cooled by the riser pipe. Water vapour condenses, and the Skoog CRCT (Capillary-Regulated Condensate Transport) distributes condensate as a continuous film across the matrix, maximizing energy transfer. Freshwater drains by gravity to a sealed storage tank.Production capacity is scalable based on the matrix size. A compact unit with a 100 m2 matrix produces approximately 2,400 litres per day. A standard industrial unit with a 500 m2 matrix produces approximately 12,000 litres per day, while a large-scale industrial unit with a 5,000 m2 matrix can reach approximately 500,000 litres per day. Delivery to shore over up to 30 km without pumping is driven by Water tank above the sea level, a 3-metre hydrostatic head above that, plus 0.43% volumetric thermal expansion as stored water is heated to approximately 30°C. The SAFA (Skoog Aerofoil Filter Accelerator ) module creates a Venturi low-pressure zone that pulls airflow through the matrix without any fans.
3. SKOOG TABLETS SCLS — COASTAL LIFE-SEEDThe Skoog Tablets (Skoog Coastal Life-Seed , SCLS) system is an open-source, electricity-free biotechnological architecture for emergency protein production. It transforms seawater into a nutrient-rich biomass within 72 hours through a closed co-culture of halophilic organisms, including Vibrio natriegens, Dunaliella salina, and Tetragenococcus halophilus. The process is entirely passive, relying on solar energy and ground insulation for temperature control. It utilizes a three-tablet protocol to minimize user error:
Tablet 1 (Circle) initiates the process by raising salinity to >7% to eliminate pathogens.
Tablet 2 (Square) provides a high-energy substrate of Sodium Nitrate and Sodium Acetate for explosive biomass growth.
Tablet 3 (Triangle) initiates fermentation and flocculation.Safety is guaranteed through three barriers. First, a visual anthocyanin-based indicator confirms a safe pH level below 4.5 by turning the liquid reddish-orange with slight yellow tones.
Second, a quassin-induced taste barrier provides extreme bitterness as a warning if the fermentation failed.
Third, a mandatory thermal treatment at 75°C ensures the final biomass is safe. Each 72-hour cycle produces approximately 40g of dry biomass, providing about 22g of pure protein.
4. THE S.K.O.O.G. ARCHITECTURE | Skoog Open Marine Technology| S.K.O.O.G. — Skoog Kinetic Orbital Oscillating Generator — is the overarching framework for all propulsion technologies. Its core insight is that ocean waves generate orbital particle motion, which is a continuous elliptical rotation of water molecules. Rather than treating this as resistance, the architecture harvests it as the sole propulsion source. This design philosophy focuses on the net energy surplus of the wave-energy platform rather than traditional speed metrics.
5. SKOOG HARVESTER -AUTONOMOUS WAVE ENERGY CARGO VESSEL (AWEV)The AWEV is a zero-fuel cargo vessel with a wave-permeable hull featuring through-going internal channels that allow waves to pass freely. Turbines in these channels convert kinetic energy into electricity for propulsion and storage. The cargo module sits 10 metres below the waterline, protected from wave motion and acting as active ballast. A 25-turbine research configuration features a 10 m turbine diameter per unit with an estimated net output of 1.9-3.0 MW. The vessel class is targeted at Handysize cargo, approximately 20,000 DWT, with a target speed of 9-10 knots.
6. SKOOG LFAS — LIFT-FORCE-OPTIMIZED ARCHIMEDES SCREWThe LFAS is the first Archimedes screw to exploit hydrodynamic lift as a torque-amplification mechanism along the entire axis. Each blade is profiled as an airfoil, generating a lift moment perpendicular to flow. A continuous radial twist keeps the lift coefficient nearly constant across the full blade radius despite varying flow velocities. The geometry produces positive torque during both forward and backward wave phases, rectifying oscillatory flow into unidirectional rotation.
7. SKOOG DALAS — DYNAMICALLY ADAPTIVE LIFT-FORCE ARCHIMEDES SYSTEMThe DALAS mounts the LFAS turbine on low-friction linear rails coupled to a Linear Permanent Magnet Generator (LPG). When a wave slam occurs, the turbine accelerates linearly with the impulse instead of absorbing it as shock, simultaneously eliminating mechanical stress and generating electricity. After the pulse, the LPG returns the turbine to its starting position using regenerative recovery. This is the first system to extract electricity simultaneously from both rotational lift force and linear wave impulse.
8. THE SKOOG TACKING PRINCIPLEThe Skoog Tacking Principle eliminates the rudder entirely. Two Azimuth-DALAS propulsion units positioned at each bow of the symmetrical double-ended hull create a controlled torque couple. Differentially vectoring their thrust positions the vessel at a 30-40 degree attack angle to the wave field, causing it to crab sideways while turbine channels remain aligned with orbital wave flux.
9. SKOOG AZIMUTH-DALAS PROPULSIONAzimuth-DALAS units are steerable ducted propulsors based on the same lift-force geometry as the DALAS harvesters. The ducted configuration achieves higher thrust efficiency than open propellers at low speeds while significantly reducing the underwater acoustic footprint. These units allow for precise maneuvering and directional thrust without the need for traditional steering surfaces.
10. SKOOG PHST — PASSIVE HYDROSTATIC STABILIZATIONThe PHST replaces electrical bearings with mechanical fluid-coupled hydraulic chambers that passively maintain the rotor’s concentric alignment in the generator. Hydrostatic pressure adjusts automatically to rotor loads, preserving the microscopic air gap between rotor and stator without active electronics or scheduled maintenance.
11. SKOOG RDG — WALL-INTEGRATED SHAFTLESS DRIVEThe RDG relocates the generator’s electromagnetic components from a central shaft to the outer rim of the turbine rotor, integrated directly into the channel wall. This eliminates the central bearing assembly, reduces mechanical losses, and allows the turbine to occupy the full duct cross-section for maximum energy capture.
12. SKOOG IAKKS — ACTIVE CERAMIC COMPOSITE COATINGThe IAKKS is the first marine coating to integrate ceramic wear resistance, active electrical antifouling, and structural delamination resistance. It uses brake-pad-grade particles like TiO2 and Al2O3 in an epoxy matrix to resist cavitation and ice. A conductive mesh encapsulated in the coating emits a low-voltage pulse (1-12 V) to disrupt microorganism adhesion without toxic discharge. The mesh also mechanically binds the coating to the substrate, preventing crack propagation.
13. The Skoog Flocculant – (Skoog Open Marine Proactive Flocculant – SOMPF) represents a fundamental shift in how we manage plastic waste.It is a material-based solution designed to solve the microplastic crisis at its root. By treating plastics during manufacturing, the material remains safe and unchanged during its primary use and through urban wastewater systems.However, upon reaching the ocean, the natural salt ions act as a key that triggers the plastic fragments to aggregate with each other and with organic marine snow.This ensures that if plastic ever enters our oceans, it forms clusters too large to be absorbed by living cells, effectively neutralizing the long-term biological threat of plastic fragmentation globally.Summary;
